If you talk to any church financial expert, or old time pastor, they will tell you that a parish’s ordinary operating expenses must be met with offertory income. When this does not happen, the parish finances get out of balance and the parish must cut expenses and in our situation, use our parish reserve funds which should be used only for emergencies such as repairs and renovations.
While we have cut expenses to the best of our ability, there are some obligations we cannot meet without relying on special funds such as donations and bequests which are always uncertain. Additionally, we cannot control the rising costs of utilities and insurance as all of you know with your own household.
Although our parish population is stable, our expenses continue to grow and we are not meeting all our financial obligations as well as in previous years. As a result we must use our savings and eventually might have to borrow money to meet these obligations. Coupled with our increasing operating expenses, there are emergency repairs occurring all the time with our buildings. Obviously such happenings are not in the annual budget and are met with our savings.
As Pastor, it is my responsibility to make sure financial disaster does not happen and it is the responsibility of all parishioners to provide the financial support, as they have always done in the past, to insure that our facilities and services are maintained.
In order to turn this situation around and keep our parish viable, our only option left is to increase our primary income, which is the weekly offerings.
This week everyone will receive a personal letter from me about this problem. I hope you will read the letter carefully and respond to my request.
